Cloud-Computing – Smart Factory Glossar
Cloud computing means the availability of resources such as computing power, storage space, and software via a network. The user neither has to possess nor manage the resources locally. Therefore, a server does not have to be operated in the company's computer center. Resources are usually accessed through the Internet via a workstation PC, notebook, or mobile device.
Service models differ depending on the offered features. A common service model is Software as a Service (SaaS). Providers use the cloud to make software and application programs available to their customers. MPDV's Smart Factory Cloud Services are an example for cloud computing in the manufacturing industry: With the SaaS model, the server for the Manufacturing Execution System HYDRA X or the Advance Planning and Scheduling System FEDRA is operated in the cloud. MPDV makes the manufacturing IT available in the cloud, connects the client environment, and integrates the ERP system. The customer installs and operates the clients and components for data collection. Costs for using cloud services are paid on a monthly basis. The Manufacturing Integration Platform (MIP) can be operated in the cloud or as an on-premises solution.
