Machine-to-Machine / M2M – Smart Factory Glossary
Machine-to-Machine or M2M for short is the automatic exchange of information between machines, robots, vehicles, or a control center via a communication network like the internet or mobile network. M2M is part of Things (IoT) which is implemented via MQTT. The network-oriented protocol enables the exchange of information between machines. For example, M2M is used for remote access to machines and their maintenance or the remote monitoring of production units.
M2M technologies can make processes more efficient and increase productivity in many areas, including the manufacturing industry. Here, M2M solutions play a major role in predictive maintenance: key operating parameters are continuously monitored to detect deviations straight away. Machines and production units can be maintained at an early stage before breakdowns occur. This can significantly reduce downtimes and save costs.
