Open Manufacturing Platform / OMP – Smart Factory Glossary

The Open Manufacturing Platform, or OMP for short, was an independent initiative founded in 2019 under the umbrella of the Joint Development Foundation, which is part of the Linux Foundation. Microsoft and the BMW Group were the founding fathers. They first presented the OMP at the Hannover Messe in 2019. The aim of the alliance was to support manufacturing companies in accelerating scalable innovations through collaboration across industries, exchange of knowledge and data, as well as access to new technologies.

The Open Manufacturing Platform enabled companies to make maximum use of their data and integrate industrial solutions faster and more securely. Several working groups were founded to this end focusing on IoT connectivity, semantic data models, or an IIoT reference architecture, for example. By working together, the companies intended to reduce operational risks and financial investments. The initiative was dissolved at the end of 2022.

MPDV's solutions pursue a similar strategy, in particular the Manufacturing Integration Platform (MIP) with its open and integrative platform approach. It offers manufacturing companies the possibility to combine and use applications of different providers on the MIP integration platform. Existing systems can easily be integrated. Thanks to the common semantic data basis, all data can be used globally by all applications on the platform.
